Modded Nintendo Switch console with custom firmware, homebrew and retro emulators

Modded Switch vs Standard Switch: What's Actually Different?

It looks identical from the outside — same Joy-Cons, same screen, same dock compatibility. So what does a modded Switch actually do that a standard one cannot? Here is the straight answer, including the trade-offs most sellers skip.

What modding adds

  • Custom firmware. The Switch runs an additional software layer that unlocks capabilities Nintendo never shipped.
  • Homebrew apps. Community-built software — media tools, utilities, save managers and more — installed straight on the console.
  • Retro emulation. This is the big one. The Switch's hardware is superb for classic systems, turning it into a dockable retro machine with proper controllers, on your TV or in your hands.
  • Custom themes. Make the home menu actually yours instead of Nintendo's white-or-black choice.

What stays the same

It is still a Switch. Physical game cartridges still play, the dock still works, Joy-Cons still slide on. You are adding a layer, not replacing the console.

The honest trade-offs

  • Online play is off the table. Running custom firmware online risks a permanent Nintendo ban. A modded Switch should live offline as a homebrew and retro machine. If online multiplayer in current titles is your priority, keep a standard Switch for that.
  • Nintendo will not touch it. Official repair channels are out for modified consoles — which is one reason ours are hand-built and tested before shipping.

Who a modded Switch is for

Retro gamers who want one dockable machine for the classics. Tinkerers who love what homebrew communities build. Anyone whose Switch has become a shelf ornament and wants a reason to pick it back up. It is a different product from a standard Switch — not a cheaper one, a more capable one, used differently.

The good news on price

Ours is currently on sale from £234.99 with storage options up to 2TB and a choice of softmod or modchip builds. That is less than many people paid for their standard console.
