Switch Softmod vs Modchip: Which Modded Switch Should You Choose?
Share
When you order our Modded Nintendo Switch, the biggest decision at checkout is one dropdown: softmod or modchipped. It is an £80 difference, and choosing right matters more than the SD card size. Here is exactly how they compare.
Softmod — from £234.99 (sale price)
The softmod build uses a software-level entry point to run custom firmware. It is the best-value way into the modded Switch world, with one thing to know upfront: it requires a one-time setup using a PC. Once that initial setup is done, you are away.
Choose softmod if: you have access to a PC, you are comfortable following simple steps once, and you would rather put the £80 saving towards a bigger SD card or a dock bundle.
Modchipped — from £349.99
The modchip build has the modification installed at the hardware level inside the console. No PC is ever needed — it is true plug-and-play from the moment you open the box, and the most convenient way to own a modded Switch, full stop.
Choose modchipped if: you do not have a PC, you are buying for someone less technical, or you simply want zero setup and zero faff — press power and play.
Side by side
- Price: softmod £234.99 vs modchip £349.99 (both with 64GB; storage scales up to 2TB on either)
- Setup: one-time PC setup vs none at all
- End result: identical day-to-day — custom firmware, homebrew, emulators and themes on both
Our honest steer
Most customers with a PC choose the softmod and are perfectly happy — the setup is a one-off. The modchip is worth every penny of the £80 for gift purchases and for anyone who wants the console working out of the box with nothing to think about. Either way, keep the console offline: custom firmware and Nintendo's online servers do not mix.
Both builds are included in our current Switch sale, and units are hand-built in small batches — so if you have been waiting for the right time, this is it.
