The 5 Best Modded Handheld Consoles in 2026 (Ranked by Real Sales Data)
Share
Most best handheld lists are one person's opinion. This one is built on orders. We hand-build and ship modded consoles every week at ModXGaming, so instead of guessing, we ranked the five handhelds our customers actually bought the most over the last 90 days — and explained why each earns its place.
1. Modded PS Vita Slim (2000)
Sony gave up on the Vita. The modding scene never did. The Slim (PCH-2000) is lighter than the original and easier on battery, and once modded it becomes a genuine emulation powerhouse: its own underrated native library, plus PSP, PS1 and a shelf of retro systems, all from one device. It has been our number one seller by revenue for months.
Modded PS Vita Slim — from £254.99, with 64GB–512GB storage and optional game tiers.
2. Modded Nintendo 3DS XL
Bigger screens make the 3DS XL the most comfortable way to play through two decades of Nintendo handheld history. With Luma custom firmware installed and configured, it arrives ready to play — no tutorials, no setup videos.
3. New Nintendo 2DS XL — Modded
All the library, none of the 3D. The New 2DS XL runs Nintendo's newer handheld internals in a lighter, flatter shell, which makes it a favourite for long sessions and for younger players. Same storage options, same plug-and-play setup.
Modded New 2DS XL — from £282.99.
4. Modded Nintendo Switch — currently on sale
The only modern console on this list. A modded Switch adds custom firmware, homebrew and retro emulation to hardware you can still dock to a TV. It is on sale right now from £234.99, with SD options from 64GB all the way to 2TB and a choice of softmod or modchip builds.
Modded Nintendo Switch — sale from £234.99.
5. Modded Nintendo 3DS
The original clamshell, in classic Aqua Blue or Flame Red. Slightly smaller screens than the XL, slightly kinder price, exactly the console a lot of us grew up with — now with the full library unlocked.
Modded Nintendo 3DS — from £229.99.
How to choose
Want the most powerful screen-in-pocket experience: PS Vita Slim. Want Nintendo's handheld library on big screens: 3DS XL or New 2DS XL. Want a modern console that doubles as a retro machine: the Switch, especially at its current sale price. Want the exact console from your childhood: the original 3DS.
FAQs
Do I need any technical knowledge?
No. Every console arrives modded and configured. The one exception is the softmod Switch option, which needs a one-time PC setup — or choose the modchipped Switch for true plug-and-play.
Can I choose my storage size?
Yes — every console on this list offers multiple SD card sizes at checkout, so you only pay for the space you will actually use.
